Creating a Maternity Wardrobe

It's my third time being pregnant.... I'm ready to pop any day but wanted to share what I've learnt along the way.

I still want to maintain my style but also be comfortable in the heat (this is my second summer pregnancy) and because I have two little ones at home to look after I also need to dress appropriately.

First time round your body takes AGES to stretch and show signs of a belly bump so you really aren't breaking out the maternity clothes til much later. (or at all if you're lucky!)

Once you're expecting for the second and subsequent pregnancies, you're reaching for those stretchy waistbands faster than you can say "honey pass the pickles!"

Blah blah, pregnancy brain.

Here are some general tips that I've learnt along the way and am sharing, in case you're keen!

Pack away the clothes that don't fit your tummy
Some items will still fit for the first and second trimester so keep them in your closet until they don't,  then pack away. That way you won't get annoyed and frustrated about what to wear when the only things you see are the items you can't wear for the next 9+ months. (Out of sight, out of mind!) It's going to make it easier on yourself to get dressed every day too.

Borrow clothes
It's like going shopping but without money. Last pregnancy my friend was clearing out her cupboard and let me borrow some clothes before she passed them on. She is a couple sizes bigger than me but because I was pregnant, a few of her tops, skirts and dresses worked. This pregnancy my SIL has lent me her maternity clothes. You don't have to wear the borrowed clothes but it's always nice to have more options.

Try to avoid buying maternity (or be smart about your purchases)
Unless you've found it at the op shop, the better maternity brands in Australia are limited and fairly pricey. I can't justify the price when a) I'm not wearing it for that long b) they generally aren't my style and c) they don't fit well.

My issue is that I have problems finding clothes that fit when I'm not pregnant... maternity clothes are the same. I prefer to try and be creative and smart with the clothes I have (or shop at thrift stores) than pay for items that will not be regular staples in my closet for years to come.  I also have a budget so that plays a major factor.

If you do buy maternity, make sure they are wardrobe staples that you're going to be getting a lot of use from during your pregnancy. Buy it on sale. And consider if it could be worn after the pregnancy to become part of your 'regular' wardrobe.

Look for pregnancy friendly styles & fabrics when shopping
Whether you visit thrift stores or regular clothing stores, look for styles that work for your growing body. Fold down and elastic waistbands, empire line dresses and skirts, wrap tops and dresses, long tops or tunics, loose flowy tops that can be belted to define your belly, cardigans, and all fabrics that stretch!

You might be hunting for a while but they are out there. If in doubt, go try it on. At least you'll know. The great thing is that these items will be able to be worn post-pregnancy. The bottom line is there are alternatives if you choose not to buy maternity!

** Some like to buy clothing a few sizes up. I personally chose not to because they generally won't fit when I'm (hopefully) back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Hence I kinda think it is a waste, but each to their own!

Use layers
No one needs to know that your pants aren't buttoned up and an elastic band is holding it together. Layer a long tank top or a bellyband over. Top a bit short? Again, long tank top or belly band for the extra coverage. Pop on a cardi and don't bother buttoning it up. Or add a jacket.
Your tunic or dress getting a bit short with the growing belly? Layer another light skirt or slip underneath, or add some leggings. Layering is perfect for winter pregnancies!

Alter or sew it yourself
If you've got the time, motivation, experience or seamstress friend close by, hunt for jeans, pants, skirts or dresses you were about to throw out or search the thrift store and alter them for maternity. There are lots of tutorials on how to create stretchy waistbands. Maxi dresses are in and are perfect for maternity. Find cheap fabrics or look in your stash - you don't need to spend a fortune, it's just to give you an extra option during your pregnancy. By all means, throw it out after you've reached your pre-preggers weight!

Get into some accessories
These are instant pick me ups and if you want them to, can distract from the large belly. Big or dangly earrings, interesting necklaces and bracelets, hats, scarves (on your head, hat, neck, tied above your belly) ...  they are cheap to buy, you can wear them no matter what size you are and it's nice to have something pretty on!

So tell me,
what are YOUR tips for maternity dressing?
Love to hear them.

Hehe, well I made a few simple maternity outfits for myself during the first pregnancy (like you, I had 3) and took great pleasure in tossing them out after the three... so I'm in the camp of getting proper maternity clothes and not bothering with whether they are going to look good on you after or not. You're not going to want to wear them after three pregnancies anyway! You're going to want something to show off your new fabulously slim bod!
I invested in a pair of maternity jeans; best money ever spent, and borrowed a denim pinafore-type dress from my sister-in-law, and these both got worn a tonne for all 3 pregnancies, and passed on to other relatives for their subsequent pregnancies, because they were expensive, comfy (because they were designed to properly accommodate a pregnant body, and not just a loose-fitting "it'll do" garment) and great wardrobe basics.
Good luck with your delivery!

Good tips!

I'm the same as carolyn, I got some maternity jeans (just cheapies from Kmart though) and I pretty much wore them everyday.

Thats funny, because this pregnancy (in due time) I have vowed to buy specific maternity clothes. I was too frugal last year, and as a result after the pregnancy everything was stretched out and I will basically need to buy a whole new winter wardrobe this year (not that i'm complaining!

I'm hoping that since you are blogging things are still going well - good luck for all thats ahead! Wonder woman! :)

Congratulations! What a great post! I'm expecting #2 in June... thanks for the tips. I definitely agree with the layering. Great for breastfeeding too! One top up and one down means baby covers any exposed boob and you're all set!
